From ancient texts it appears to have been a “Sacred” animal for the city of Venice since it saved it from the terrible plague of the 16th century by managing to defeat the rats that carried the scourge.
Reference is made to an ancient manuscript, which would say that the Doge himself had sent his ships to Egypt and Syria to transport the cats to Venice.
But this mask is also called “Gnaga” in Venetian dialect, a mask worn very often during the carnival even by men who disguised themselves as women and imitated the meowing of cats with a shrill voice.
