Mali Garnet is a trade name for a variety of garnet found in Mali in west Africa. “Ugrandites” are a rare intermediate between both Andradite and Grossular garnet species. These have tones of pea green, chartreuse and orangey-brown in the right light.There’s so many things all at once!

Garnet is the January birthstone! Rugged, masculine and sexy.Each stone is a deep red-brown-orange with a subtle flash of deep red in just the perfect light. Each stone is unique; these special garnets are un-touched and un-polished and wholly naturally faceted via the Earth alone – no two will ever be alike. Some even have little “sidecar” growths – one or more small baby crystals on the larger plane.

►ABOUT THE STONE:
Geologically, Mali garnets are unique because they are a hybrid of two different garnet species: Grossular and Andradite. Because this gem variety is not represented by any of the gem garnet terms previously in use, it is described as “grossular-andradite” hybrid by the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory. Mali garnets have a beautiful color unlike any other, which can range from a a reddish orange brown, to a golden to chartreuse yellow, brownish green, or rarely, even a mint or chrome green. The dominating composition of Grossular gives this variety its color, while the small Andradite component gives Mali garnets their fire. As their name implies, this variety was discovered in the West African country of Mali in 1994. Most of the crystals show dodecahedral faces; some also show minor trapezohedral forms.
In lore, Garnet is believed to get its name from Latin for “seed” (granate) due to red garnet’s similarity to a pomegranate seed. Intuitive healers believe that garnet is a stone of regeneration and energizing, having the ability to boost the energy of an entire system and revitalize it. A stone of commitment; garnet represents love, bringing warmth, devotion, understanding, trust, sincerity and honesty to a relationship.
►ABOUT THE CRAFTSMANSHIP:
NEW! I use traditional, time-honored lapidary techniques to drill into the stones in order to sink the cufflink hardware deep into the stone’s surface, so your cufflinks will not come apart. This time-consuming process is done in addition to the adhesive and resin layers that attach the stones to the metal cufflink hardware. Most crafters skip this most important drilling (and resin) step.

Each pair of cufflinks is unique and one of a kind, and made by hand by printmaker, metalworking artist and Cyberoptix founder, Bethany Shorb. I work between my home base in Detroit, MI and a mobile RV studio Arizona, where I source all our stone, crystal, shell, fossil and horn specimens there and at the Tucson and Quartzsite AZ gem shows. All are intuitively sourced in person, from only the most reputable individual suppliers.
