This is a lovely lightweight silver birch staff, which has approximately 9 twists and is fairly sturdy and straight. The bark has been left on the handle for grip whilst the rest has been de-barked, sanded to 120 grit and oiled with organic beeswax oil.

This beautiful birch staff is creamy beige in colour and feels strong and dependable. Its twists are caused by the clockwise growth of honeysuckle which wraps itself around the tree and branches.

The wood for this staff has been ecologically sourced and it is the by-product of woodland management works.

The birch is a very adaptable tree and is one of the only deciduous trees to be able to survive in the far northern hemisphere and has a number of tricks up its sleeve in order to do this. One of which is the fact that it is a bark photosynthetic tree. The black horizontal markings on the bark are called lenticels and allow air into the living tissue so the tree can photosynthesise in winter even though the leaves have all been shed. Another adaptation is the white/silver colour of the bark which reflects the sun’s rays, so preventing frost crack. Birch bark also peels off regularly so preventing lichen or algae from growing on the bark. As these are dark coloured they would prevent the bark from being as reflective.

Silver birch is known as the ‘Lady of the Woods’ because of its delicate appearance. The birch tree can teach us a lot about resilience and overcoming difficulties. As it is a pioneer species it is also associated with new beginnings and for this reason was used to make babies’ cradles. Carrying a birch talisman is said to protect you from harm.
